The Prevalence of Anaemia among Pregnant Mothers Attending Antenatal Clinic at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital
Anaemia is a condition in which the number of Red blood cells or their oxygen carrying capacity is insufficient tomeet physiologic needs which vary by age, sex, altitude, smoking and pregnancy status.The study specific objectiveswere to determine the prevalence of anemia among pregnant mothers that attended antenatal clinic at Jinja ReginalReferral Hospital and as well as to determine the risk factors associated with anemia and also to determine theprevalence of anemia among primigravidas and multigravidas.It was a cross sectional study and data was collectedfrom 102 samples of pregnant mothers. The samples were collected using consecutive sampling technique andanalyzed using cyanmethaemoglobin method. The data and results of analysis were then collected from thelaboratory request forms and check list. This was then analyzed using simple excel data sheet analysis andgraphically presented in form of tables, pie charts and graphs.The study showed that the prevalence of anemia amongpregnant mothers that attended antenatal clinic at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital was found to be 55% and therisk factors associated with anemia were; malaria parasites (14%), intestinal helminthes (4%), knowledge (66%), age32.1% between 26 to 30 and 14% above 31years.The study further established the prevalence of anemia amongprimigravidas and multigravidas which was found to be 68% and 32% respectively. Study showed that theprevalence of anemia among pregnant mothers that attended antenatal clinic at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital wasfound to be 55%.
