Adherence to HAART Among HIV Patients Attending Naama Health Centre III: Prevalence and Influencing Factors
Uganda is making significant progress towards achieving the 1st 90:90:90 target, with 89%of HIV patients aware of their status, 94% on HIV treatment, and 90% virally suppressed. Astudy at Naama Health Centre III found that adherence to HAART among HIV patients was87.8%, slightly lower than the UNAIDS recommendation of 90%. Factors influencingadherence include post-primary education, age over 35, failure to disclose HIV status to aclose relative, and development of drug side effects. The study recommends thegovernment to conduct mass sensitization campaigns on public media, counselors toemphasize adherence during Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) sessions, and patients todisclose their HIV status to a close family to minimize HIV-related stigma. The study alsosuggests that the government should conduct mass media campaigns to increase awarenessof HAART adherence, and counsellors should emphasize the importance of adherenceduring RCT sessions
