Dr. Maria Edet Umo is the Dean of the School of Law at Kampala International University, where she provides strategic leadership in legal education, curriculum development, research, quality assurance, and academic governance. She is committed to advancing excellence in legal scholarship while preparing graduates with the knowledge, ethical values, and practical skills required for contemporary legal practice.
With over 17 years of legal practice and more than seven years of experience in academia, Dr. Umo has held several leadership positions in higher education, including Head of the Department of Private Law and Senior Lecturer. She has played a significant role in curriculum development, faculty research, academic mentorship, and institutional quality enhancement. Earlier in her career, she served as a Legal Officer with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria, where she advised on electoral law, regulatory compliance, and legal proceedings.
Dr. Umo holds a PhD in Law, a Master of Laws (LL.M), a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), and is a Barrister-at-Law of the Nigerian Law School. Her research interests include human rights law, international law, environmental law, gender justice, privacy and communication law, international arbitration, and human trafficking. She has published extensively in reputable scholarly journals and actively contributes to legal research and policy discourse.
An accomplished academic and mentor, Dr. Umo has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate research, taught a broad range of law courses, and contributed to curriculum review and accreditation processes. Through her leadership, scholarship, and commitment to justice, she continues to strengthen legal education, research excellence, and professional development at Kampala International University.
