Deans and Principals

Engr. Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Lawan is a Professor of Civil Engineering who specialized in Structures. He graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Master of Civil Engineering (Structures) from the prestigious Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Nigeria. He bagged a PhD in Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor-Bahru.

Prof. Lawan is the Dean, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, at Kampala International University, Western Campus Ishaka-Bushenyi where he provides strategic leadership for academic programmes, research development, and professional training within the school. In this role, he oversees curriculum development and implementation as well as research initiatives across engineering disciplines; while ensuring alignment with institutional goals and regulatory standards. He also plays a key role in strengthening industry–academia collaboration and advancing innovation-driven teaching and learning.

Prof. Lawan is a seasoned academic and researcher in Civil Engineering (Structures), with extensive experience in teaching, research, and academic administration for over two decades. He has contributed significantly to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with a strong emphasis on structural engineering subjects, steel design, and composite systems. Over the years, he has held several leadership positions within the university system, where he served in different capacities as; Head of Civil Engineering Department, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Director of Sports at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, formerly Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil, in Kano, Nigeria. Also, he served as Head of Civil Engineering Department at Kampala International University (KIU), Uganda before becoming the Dean. 

In addition to his academic responsibilities, Prof. Lawan is actively engaged in research, community service and professional practice. He is a member of recognized professional engineering bodies and has contributed to advancing engineering education and practice through research, consultancy, and mentorship. Through his leadership and scholarly contributions, he continues to promote excellence in engineering education and research within SEAS and KIU at large. He published widely in reputable international high ranked journals and has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate research (Masters and PhDs) in civil and structural engineering and related fields. His research interest is on the use of Cold-Formed Steel-Concrete composites, Civil Engineering Materials, Concrete Technology and Academic Writing.
