Directors

Professor Dominic Byarugaba is the Director of Higher Degrees and Research at Kampala International University, Western Campus, where he provides strategic leadership in postgraduate education, research governance, academic quality, and research capacity development. He is dedicated to strengthening the University's research ecosystem through innovation, international collaboration, and the promotion of high-impact scholarship.

With over 25 years of experience in higher education, research, and institutional leadership, Professor Byarugaba is a distinguished environmental scientist whose expertise spans biodiversity conservation, ethnobotany, sustainable development, and environmental policy. Prior to joining Kampala International University, he served as Executive Director of the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD), where he led regional initiatives involving universities across East Africa and successfully mobilized international research funding while fostering partnerships with global development organisations.

Professor Byarugaba holds a PhD in Ethnobotany, a Master of Science in Environment, and a Bachelor of Science in Botany and Zoology. He also completed a Commonwealth Postdoctoral Fellowship in pharmacognosy and medicinal plant research at the University of York, United Kingdom. His research has resulted in more than 58 peer-reviewed publications, with significant contributions to biodiversity conservation, medicinal plant research, ecosystem resilience, climate change, and sustainable resource management.

An accomplished researcher and mentor, Professor Byarugaba has supervised numerous Master's and PhD candidates while contributing to research policy, curriculum development, and international academic collaboration. Through his leadership and scholarship, he continues to advance postgraduate education, research excellence, and innovation, positioning Kampala International University as a leading centre for research and knowledge generation in Africa.
