KIU, Western Campus – Arkline Twikirize is a Bachelor’s of Education student at KIU Western Campus currently doing her internship at Crane High School, a private secondary school in Kashenyi Parish, Nyabubare sub-county in Bushenyi district.

She teaches Kiswahili and History, the subjects she studied at campus. She started her first School Practice on 31 January and completed it on 31 March and is currently doing her second school practice which started on 9 May and will end on 9 July.

“On my first day in class when I started my first school practice, I remember I was instructed to conduct a History lesson for the senior two class at Crane High,” Twikirize narrates.

“I went with the resident teacher to the classroom and he introduced me to the students. He sat at the back of the classroom as I began the lesson. Though I was nervous at first, the students’ reception calmed me down and I conducted the lesson quite well to the extent that the resident teacher appreciated my efforts,” she adds, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

Twikirize says that she has enjoyed her school practice because the students like her and they strive to get involved in discussing and answering questions in class, something which she says gives her a lot of satisfaction.

She adds that she has gained experience in teaching and has learnt how to interact with students and she believes that she can now conduct a lesson in any class, anywhere.

Her school practice has however not been without challenges.

“The distance from Ishaka Town where I stay to Kashenyi is around 4 kilometers which wouldn’t have been very far but it means that I have to use a boda-boda, which doesn’t come cheap for a student like me,” she reveals.

She advises students who are still at campus to put their studies before anything else and persevere because it is very important for them to complete school.
