KIU, Western Campus – A team from the Business, Vocational, Technical Education and Training (BTVET) at the Ministry of Education and Sports that inspected KIU Western Campus’ School of Nursing Sciences last week to ascertain its readiness to roll out new Midwifery courses was left impressed.

The team was invited by the university as part of its plans to start offering Diploma in Midwifery Direct and Midwifery Extension programmes at the Western Campus’ Nursing School, which plans had been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a meeting which was chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor KIU, Western Campus, Prof. Patrick Kyamanywa, the three-person team embarked on a tour of the Nursing School’s facilities including classes, hostels, computer library, the main library, skill laboratories, staff offices as well as studying staff and student records.

After the inspection, the team relayed their impression of the Nursing school’s infrastructure, with all the 3 inspectors awarding a score of more than 80%. Mary Petua Mubeezi (wearing red blouse in the picture), one of the team members who inspected the library lauded the Nursing school for availing its students with quality reading materials including their e-learning resource.

“Your library has adequate space and materials both hard and soft copy and even though the student numbers are big, the space is enough to accommodate them all,” Mubeezi, also the Education, Training and Registration Manager at the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) said.

The Dean, School of Nursing (SON), Annet Kabanyoro was delighted with the team’s assessment and promised to continue on improving the learning spaces for both nurses and midwives.

“I thank the BTVET inspection team for their positive feedback and we await your official communication about the inspection and I am positive that you will give the best assessment,” Kabanyoro said.

The team was also left marvelled at the school’s skills lab which has a wide range of high-quality equipment that is enough for all the students to practice with.
