KIU, Main Campus - Debate is one aspect that is definitely not for all of us but for Urban Murangira, A final law student at Kampala International University, debate is one way for him to showcase his public speaking skills.
Urban Murangira is the Founding President of the Debate Union Club at Kampala International University and a motivational speaker.
The just concluded 1st Inter School/College Debate Tournament was his first-ever organised debate at the University. It lasted three days, and started with the modal debate on 9th March 2020 in the moot court. The debate also had a mixture of public speaking sessions and preliminary debate sessions.
In 2019, Urban Murangira won an award for the Best Debater at the Uganda Dialogue Arena Debate Tournament. He also won the Best Public Speaker Award at the Uganda Public Speakers Association Nationals.
According to Urban, the journey has been long and he is finally happy that the debate club has done something that will stay forever.
"Previously people thought that debate was only for lawyers. The reason we called our club the 'Debate Union Club' is so as to unite all the colleges together and source out great debaters from different colleges," he said.
He was thankful to their Patron, Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Janice Busingye for having given them support.
"Our patron is a great debater, and we are excited that she is our patron. She has been there for us and we are humbled," he said.
He advised students never to leave the places they go to without leaving an impact. He is however glad and overjoyed that he is leaving a great legacy behind for generations to emulate.
