KIU, Main Campus - Harvey Kanyankole Guma, a third year law student at KIU, has published a hand book for the youth, titled ‘ Uganda and SDGs’ in which he highlights, explains and emhasises the inclusion, participation and the role of the youth in the realization of Sustainable Development Goals.

The book, which he plans to distribute freely, cites and fully explores all the 17 sustainable development goals(SDG’s). According to the author, Harvey Kanyankole, the book gives knowledge about each goal in its entirety and talks about the youth inclusion in sustainable development.

‘’I have also gone ahead to talk about the youths’ inclusion in sustainable development. Sustainable development is where the current needs do not compromise the needs of the future. The youth are key participants in the development. Take a look at people aged 20 now, they will be 40 in the next 20 years. So, they have a right to participate in the decision-making processes that are about their future. The moment they don’t creates a gap in their knowledge for the future," Harvey stated.

Harvey was inspired by the UN Ideal to have a world of inclusion and a brief by his then teacher in high school in 2015 about the coming of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).

’’My teacher’s insight into the sustainable development goals inspired me to start writing weekly articles about UN and SDGs for the school notice boards and the culture kept with me until now,’’ Harvey explained.

He added that working on the book started in December 2019, but due to unavoidable circumstances including attending to school demands, there was no progress until the COVID-19 lockdown that came as a blessing in disguise. The lockdown that saw all schools and learning institutions close for almost the whole of 2020 gave him ample time to concentrate and complete the book.

He intends to distribute the book for free in order to create awareness among the youths about the sustainable development goals, and to also help empower them to participate in the sustainable development agenda.

‘’I have no idea about selling this book because this is knowledge for sustainable development, and mind you, it is not my book but knowledge that must be shared. My major aim is to have many youths get to know about the sustainable development agenda,’’ Harvey affirmed.

While this is Harvey’s first book to be successfully published, there are several others that are pending publication. Among these is a wonderful poetry book that he says will be out very soon.

Apart from being a writer and an author, Harvey Kanyankole is also a student leader. He has served in both the Guild Union of KIU and the Law Society. He is the Head of Programs at the KIU Giraffe Times (KGT).
