KIU, Western Campus – Emma Masaba might be just in the third year of his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (BMS) course, but he has already set his goal – being a molecular biologist.

According to Wikipedia, molecular biology is the branch of biology that seeks to understand the molecular basis of biological activity in and between cells, including molecular synthesis, modification, mechanisms, and interactions, something that interests Masaba.

In lay terms, it deals with the structure and function of the macromolecules (e.g. proteins and nucleic acids) essential to life.

“I have a lot of research I intend to do to improve the health system especially in molecular biology so that I can have a lasting impact on my community,” Masaba says.

“I believe this will impact many people health wise and education wise which will in turn create better opportunities for members of my community and the whole country at large,” he adds.

Masaba, who joined KIU in 2019, hails the university for shaping his way of thinking and giving him a unique perspective to education, something that he joined the institution for.

“I joined KIU because of its clout in the job market. I was impressed by the great doctors out there who are products of KIU and hopefully, when I am finished with my course, I will be like or better than them,” he says.

Masaba says he is not disappointed with the choice he made because KIU “is a great place to be, has a conducive study environment and has some of the best equipment and laboratories in the country.”

He also says that the cost of living around Ishaka is low and the social life is conducive because of the availability of almost all the facilities required for one to live comfortably and affordably.

He cites COVID-19 as one of the biggest challenges he has encountered since he began his course because it brought disruptions to his academic progress.

Masaba advises fellow students to do their best in whatever they do and leave the rest to God.
