September 16, 2024, 4:24 am
KIU, Main Campus - On Monday, April 8th, 2024, Kampala International University hosted the 14th National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Career Expo held on the 5th floor of the Idii Basajjabalaba Memorial Library. The event, themed 'Define your goals, Defy the Odds', aimed to provide students with insights and opportunities for career advancement.
The NSSF Career Expo is the ultimate university event that offers a platform for students to network and learn from established industry practitioners for career advice, and personal growth as well as extend opportunities to land internship and practice opportunities.
The Assistant Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Consultancy and Extension (ADVC-RICE), Dr. Mustapha Mundu, applauded NSSF for organising the career expo, highlighting its value in providing students with internship opportunities and facilitating connections with potential employers.
“On behalf of KIU, I would like to thank NSSF for organising such an insightful Career Expo. Our gates are always open whenever such opportunities are available” Dr. Mundu said.
Speaking to students, Ms. Carol Beyanga, a journalist, mentor, and media consultant encouraged them not to feel intimidated by those who seem to have their lives sorted out. She advised them to forge their paths and maintain patience, reassuring them that success would come in due time.
"Let people know what you want to do so that they can help you. Grab every opportunity, however little it pays. It will teach you the skills that you will need in the next big job that you want,” Carol said.
Apollo Mbowa, the Financial Literacy Manager of NSSF, emphasized the critical need for proactive financial planning, stating, “It is either you grow up or grow old. If you do not save, money will not save you. He underscored the importance of taking action, asserting, You will only get paid when you act. Action changes things.”
During the career expo, the Chief Financial Officer, Stevens Mwanje, imparted valuable advice to students, not to follow someone else's purpose, arguing that everyone is different and unique in their ways.
Mwanje emphasized the importance of authenticity and encouraged students to stay true to themselves as they navigate their professional and personal aspirations.
“You are a unique human being and you have your purpose. Do not take the “facade” that people portray of soft life, you do not know what people are going through or what they did to get there. Follow your path,” Mwanje concluded.
Among other notable speakers who attended the conference was the renowned Bennon Mugumbya, the Founder of Swangz Avenue an Audio and Film company in Uganda, who further argued students to develop their people skills.
“If you do not develop your people skills, it will be difficult for you to meet people, collaborate and get business. The better your people skills, the higher your chances are of making it to the top of the food chain.”
He adds that your education must not limit your imagination. There is a high chance that your education might define your career but leave room for finding creativity in other things.
At the end of the event, KIU students Maron Aceng and Twinomujuni Fredrick were granted the opportunity to undertake internships at NSSF.
