The Director of the African Union's Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Dr John Nkengasong, has been awarded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) 2020 Global Goalkeeper Award, the African Union has announced.

The award celebrates an established individual or group who has demonstrated commitment to the global development goals through impactful work during or in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in their country or globally.

The award was handed over to Dr Nkengasong by Dr Solomon Zewdu, the Deputy Director for Health at the BMGF at a small ceremony at the African Union headquarters.

A message from the BMGF hailed Dr Nkengasond for being an important and central voice for Africa's medical community and his collaborative work across continents and advocacy for equitable healthcare for all.
