KIU, Western Campus - As Kampala International University (KIU) celebrates 25 years of academic excellence, the institution stands at a pivotal moment—poised to redefine its teaching and learning approaches in the face of an evolving global education landscape. At the heart of this transformation is Professor Muhammad Ndaula, the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor (VC 00000001), whose foundational leadership continues to shape the university’s vision.
A distinguished Philosopher and education strategist, Prof. Ndaula has long championed learner-centered education, emphasizing critical thinking, intellectual empowerment, and the deliberate pursuit of global academic standards. As KIU prepares to welcome students from a new curriculum background, he has tasked the university’s technical team with ensuring that the institution remains a leader in international education, training, and pedagogical innovation.
This call to action was the focal point of the Leadership and Management Training, facilitated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, DVC Finance & Administration Dr. Mundu Mustafa, and KIU University Council Member Mr. Ambrose Kibuuka. The discussions centred on how KIU can align its teaching methodologies with the expectations of a globally competitive academic institution.
"Education is no longer bound by borders. We must equip our students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly changing world. KIU’s future depends on how well we adapt to this new reality,” Prof. Ndaula emphasized.
Reflecting on KIU’s organizational culture, Prof. Ngoma underscored its central role in shaping institutional success. Quoting the famous principle, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast,” he emphasized that a strong academic culture must drive the university’s strategic direction.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mundu Mustafa highlighted the necessity of multilingual articulation in academia, ensuring that KIU remains an inclusive environment for international students and scholars. “Language is a bridge to knowledge. The ability to communicate effectively in a globalized world will be an asset to both our students and faculty,” he remarked.
Adding to the discourse, the University Secretary, Ms. Asiati Mbabazi reinforced the importance of discipline and communication among faculty, stressing that academic leaders must exemplify the standards they wish to instil in students. “Our conduct, professionalism, and commitment to excellence will shape the next generation of scholars and leaders,” she said.
As the session concluded, Prof. Ndaula revisited the challenge of adapting to the new curriculum, acknowledging that it would be a rigorous transition. However, he remained optimistic that KIU would remain at the forefront of higher education in Africa with the right strategies, faculty training, and international benchmarking.
"KIU is not just celebrating 25 years; we are preparing for the next 25. Under the visionary leadership of University Chairman Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba, we have built an institution that does more than impart knowledge—it transforms lives. Our challenge now is to ensure that KIU continues to set the standard for higher education in Uganda and beyond,” Prof. Ndaula concluded.
As KIU moves forward, its deliberate investment in international education, teaching, and learning will be key to sustaining its reputation as a centre of excellence, shaping Africa’s intellectual future.
