KIU Main Campus- KIU soccer coach Geoffrey Akabwai is confident he will emerge the winner of the best UFL defender of the decade award in an awards ceremony happening today 7th December 2022 at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala. Organized by the executive committee of the Pepsi University football league as part of celebrating 10 years of success, the event will see top individuals from all football departments receive various accolades respectively.

Akabwai played for KIU between 2012 and 2015 before taking over as coach thereafter. He was named the most valuable player when KIU won the chairman's cup in 2013. That year, Akabwai was indeed on top of his game for he also helped KIU reach the semifinals of the Pepsi University football league.

He is facing tough competition for the best defender of the decade award from Nkumba's Nicholas Maganga and Gift Fred of Bugema University but to him, getting nominated alone is a sign that his hardwork and extraordinary leadership have finally been recognised.

"it means a lot, it means that my Talent mixed with hard work, consistency, and good leadership have been honored and recognized plus recognizing my University," he said.

The University football league first kicked off on 19th September 2012. It has been credited for producing and nurturing footballers who have taken their careers to greater heights and have added to the growth of football in Uganda.
