Uganda ended Nigeria's FIBA AfroBasket 2021 campaign with a shocking 80-62 victory on Tuesday at the Kigali arena in Rwanda.

The Silverbacks, who had never won a single game at the Afrobasket before this year’s edition, surprised the fancied Nigerians, dominating them from start to finish.

An opening 24-12 first quarter set the pace for a victory which was won with every drop of sweat from the Ugandans, with Toronto Raptors star Ishmail Wainwright once again leading the way with an inspiring performance, notching eleven points, eleven rebounds and 6 assists.

Robinson Opong came off the bench to score 18 of his team-high 19 points from behind the arc, and Deng John Geu, Arthur Kaluma and Adam Seiko combined for 31 points to help Uganda stay in contention.

The win means Uganda will play in the quarter-finals of the Afrobasket for the very first time.

Meanwhile, neighbours Kenya, who have KIU Titans star Ariel Okall on their roster, narrowly lost out to debutants South Sudan 58-60 in a hotly contested encounter.

They join fellow regional rivals and hosts Rwanda who were also eliminated a day earlier.
