KIU, Western Campus – Members of the KIU Western Campus Congolese Students’ Association (KIUCOSA) last week put aside their books for a night as they joined fellow countrymen all over the world to celebrate the Democratic Republic of Congo’s 62nd Independence Day.

The students held the celebrations at Swing Inn Motel in Ishaka Town on June 30 and they wined, dined and danced till the wee hours of the morning.

Each student parted with 30,000 shillings and they started the do as early as 7:30 PM as they came together to enjoy Congolese dishes as well as Congolese dances and music.

The turn-up was decent as the over 100 Congolese students at KIU Western Campus also celebrated their country’s hero Patrice Lumumba.

Patrice Lumumba was a Congolese independence leader who became the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 30, 1960 but was assassinated January 1961.

His remains consisting of a single golden tooth were returned to the DRC by the Belgian government and were laid to rest on June 30, 2022.
