Peruth Chemutai has made history after winning gold in the 3,000 meters steeplechase to become the first Ugandan woman to win an Olympic medal.

Chemutai, who was considered nowhere among the medal favourites, upset the field to control the race from early on and turn up the gear in the final 400 meters to clinch gold.

She raced to the front of the 15-woman field in the second lap and remained among the top two after being overtaken by silver medallist Court Frerichs, but she accelerated in the final lap to overtake Frerichs and storm to gold.

She joins legends John Akii Bu and Stephen Kiprotich as Uganda’s only other Olympic gold medalists ever.

Congratulations Peruth Chemutai! We are proud of you!
