KIU, Western Campus – Boniface Osodi, the president of the Federation of Uganda Medical Students Associations (FUMSA) has welcomed President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to officials of the Ministry of Education to meet and discuss the reopening of medical schools in the country.

While addressing the nation on July 3o about the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Uganda and the announcement of the easing of lockdown restrictions, president Museveni said medical students need to go back to school very soon because they are part of the health workforce.

And Osodi, a fourth-year student of medicine at KIU Western Campus, has welcomed the president’s remarks.

“Speaking for the medical students, it was a win-win situation because we have been having several meetings about the modalities under which medical schools can be reopened,” Osodi told this website in a WhatsApp interview.

“I was told the Ministry officials will meet this week to decide but the NCHE (National Council for Higher Education) recommended that within two weeks, we open up and medical students proceed,” he revealed.

In June, Osodi wrote a letter to NCHE and the Ministry of Education to request that medical students in clinical years should be allowed to continue with their training because they can help in the fight against COVID-19.

He however says the president should have been more specific about the time of reopening of medical schools because engagements between Medical Students leaders and NCHE plus the ministry have been ongoing for some time.
