Bachelor of Clinical Medicine and Community Health (Direct)

The 4 ½ years degree program has been designed to recognize that its graduates will have an advanced training in basic and biomedical sciences, clinical medicine and community health in order to provide health care that will integrate curative and preventive health care thus comprising of both theoretical and practical aspects. The Bachelor of Clinical Medicine shall extend over a period of at least 186 weeks divided into 4 ½ academic years of each for regular students with total of 253 CUs. There will be compulsory community health attachment during third year of the academic study for all students which will cover 8 weeks for community diagnosis and 4 weeks of Health Service Management. The entire program will entail 53 course units. The basic course units (Multi-Professional Programme) shall be offered in year 1 semester 1 (1.1) and the core units shall be offered from second Year second semester to fourth year, (2.2 -4.2). Details of the course units are shown in the program structure below.

By the end of the programme, students are expected to demonstrate the knowledge, practical skills and professional conduct required for effective work in Clinical Medicine and Community Health.

The learning experience is organised to move students from foundational knowledge into applied, supervised and professionally oriented practice.

Candidates wishing to study for the Bachelor of Clinical Medicine and Community Health degree programme shall have met the minimum University entry requirements as stipulated in the KIU Statutes and as per the minimum admission requirements by NCHE (statutory instrument No 63 of 2007). Five (5) entry points are available for persons wishing to enter the Bachelor of Clinical Medicine and Community Health (BCMCH) degree programme: 

Holders of the Advanced ("A ") Level Certificate:  

In order to be eligible for direct entry into the BCMCH programme, a candidate must have:   

1. Sat and passed the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination or its equivalent and obtained a certificate in it with passes in at least five subjects taken at the same sitting. 
   
2. Sat and passed the Uganda Advanced Level School certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent with at least two (2) principal passes in Biology and Chemistry.
   

Holders of Kenya School Certificate of Education:

In order to be eligible for direct entry into the BCMCH programme, a candidate must:   

1. Hold a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum mean grade of C+ (Plus). 
   
2. Have obtained a C+ (Plus) in each of the four (4) cluster subjects as shown below: 

Holders of School Certificate Graded in Percentages and Average Points: 

In order to be eligible for direct entry into the BCMCH programme, a candidate whose final high school marks are graded in percentages and average point systems such as in Sudan, The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Burundi must have their grades first equated or standardized by UNEB before seeking KIU admission.

Holders of Diplomas in Medical Sciences:

In order to be eligible for admission into the BCMCH programme, a candidate must:

Possess a good diploma or its equivalent in a health related field such as Clinical Medicine, Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiography, Public Health, Dental Health, Advanced Nursing, Registered

• Nursing and Pharmacy Technology from recognized institutions 
  
• Be registered with the relevant professional council of the home country where applicable.
  
• The institution from which such a qualification was obtained must be recognized by KIU Senate.
  

Holders of Bachelor's Degrees in Sciences: 

In order to be eligible for admission into the BCMCH degree programme, a candidate must:

1. Possess a Bachelor's degree in science disciplines.  
   
2. Have obtained the above qualifications from an institution of higher learning recognized by KIU Senate.
   

Basic Sciences or Multi-Professional Training Programme (MPP)

All the candidates who have been admitted under entry points 6.1.1-6.1.5 above must attend the Multiprofessional Training Programme (MPP) of KIU at the Western Campus and obtain passes in all courses of the programme before they can be admitted into the BCMCH programme described in this curriculum.

Transfers from other Programmes within KIU

Admission into the BCMCH programme by transfer from other programmes within KIU will be in accordance with the transfer rules as described in the Rules and regulations Governing assessment and examinations for undergraduate students of KIU-WC.

Transfer from other equivalent programmes of other Institutions 

Any student seeking for admission into the BCMCH programme, who has been attending a similar programme in another Institution of higher learning recognized by KIU senate;

1. Shall start from year one Trimester one of this programme, if he/she was discontinued from the programme of the institution he/she is transferring from.
2. Exemptions from any of the multi-professional training programme courses shall be considered by the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences Board and a recommendation made, in regard to each course, to the campus Board. The campus Board may approve or vary the recommendation.
   
3. Shall be considered for advanced standing admission (admission at a level beyond year one Trimester one of the programme) by the faculty of Biomedical Sciences Board/ SAHS Board as the specific case may require, and a recommendation made to senate through the campus Board regarding the level of entry into the programme and the courses he/she has to be exempted, if any.  The campus Board and senate may approve or vary the recommendation.
   

 In both situations (6.1.7 and 6.1.8), shall produce the following documents before he/she is considered; a) Original O' level certificate or its equivalent.

• Original A' Level certificate, where applicable.
  
• Academic transcripts for the years attended in the Institution he/she is transferring from.

Tuition, functional fees and any programme-specific charges are confirmed by KIU Admissions and Finance for each intake. Applicants should review the current fee schedule before submitting an application.
