Advancing Clinical Legal Education: School of Law at Western Holds Historic Moot Court Event

KIU, Western Campus - The School of Law at Western Campus reached a significant milestone on Friday, 21st March 2025, when it held its Maiden Moot Court Competition, an event aimed at enriching Clinical Legal Education. Presided over by His Worship Deogratious Tendo of Magistrate Court 1 in Mitooma District, Uganda, this epoch-making event showcased the intellectual and legal prowess of aspiring law students.

The competition revolved around a breach of contract case, providing an excellent platform for two competing law firms—Firm "A" representing the plaintiff and Firm "B" defending the defendant—to exhibit their advocacy skills and mastery of the Law of Contract.

Firm "A" featured the following counsel:

  1. Atunkunda Judith
  2. Ahimbisibwe Bright
  3. Birungi Nicholas
  4. Mugabirwe Patience
  5. Natukunda Angella

On the other side, representing Firm "B," were:

  1. Kiyohangirwe Bridget
  2. Agumeaitewe Gerald
  3. Habiyaremye Daniel
  4. Amanya Agastone
  5. Kamusiime Ritie

Each team presented three witnesses, engaging in rigorous cross-examination and re-examination to build their cases. The trial concluded with oral submissions from both teams, which were instrumental in identifying the competition's standout participants.

A panel of three lecturers, alongside the presiding magistrate, assessed the performances, determining Firm "B" as the Best Overall team. Individual accolades went to Csl. Natukunda Angella from Firm "A," who claimed the title of Best Oralist, and Csl. Agumeaitewe Gerald from Firm "B," who emerged as the First Runner-up.

To cap off the event, the Director of Academic Affairs at Western Campus, Dr. Joe Mutebi, presented medals and certificates to the participants on behalf of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Western Campus, Assoc. Prof. Eric Mabonga. The competition not only celebrated academic excellence but also set a precedent for future moot court initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of legal luminaries.
