KIU Student Bags Gold Medal for Uganda at East Africa Karate Championships

KIU, Western campus - As part of its efforts to showcase ground-breaking solutions to real-world problems and turn students' ideas into reality, Kampala International University, Western Campus (KIU-WC) through the Centre of Excellence for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CoEEI) under the Directorate of Research, Innovation, Consultancy and Extension (DRICE) hosted an innovation challenge pitching event. The event, held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the Staff Common Room, brought together students from various faculties to compete for a chance to represent KIU on the global stage.
In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Patrick Aja Maduabuchi, Director of RICE, stated, "At KIU, we prioritize fostering innovation and transforming ideas into reality. We encourage you to share your ideas with the world, as they have the potential to make a significant impact." He emphasized the importance of originality in the presentations.

Representing Assoc. Prof. Eric Mabonga, Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), KIU-WC, Dr. Ibrahim Babangida Abubakar, Assistant DVC of Academics & Research, described the event as a platform for students to showcase innovative solutions to real-world challenges. "Your ideas are valued, and we anticipate hearing your pitches, as every participant is a winner in this forum," he said.
In unison, Dr. Joe Mutebi Ojera, Director of Academic Affairs, KIU-WC, highlighted the challenge as an opportunity to demonstrate the transformative power of innovation in education. "This is a moment to embed innovation at the heart of our curriculum, empowering our students to become change-makers and leaders in their fields. By embracing innovation, we can unlock new possibilities and create an environment where our students can excel and make a meaningful impact," he noted.
Sharif Kamiisi Musiige, Guild Minister for Research and Innovation, emphasized the importance of creativity and risk-taking, saying, "Innovation involves generating new ideas and applying existing knowledge in innovative ways to drive progress. It entails building upon familiar concepts and reimagining them to create fresh insights. We encourage you to share your ideas, as they have the potential to yield meaningful breakthroughs."

Speaking further, Dr. Mohammed Dahiru Buhari, Director of CoEEI, explained that the event was a response to the students' needs, "We have listened to your voices, and we know you are filled with innovative ideas waiting to be unleashed. This event is our way of bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world application. We are here to support you in turning your ideas into tangible solutions."
He added that the best ten innovators will receive intensive training and mentorship at the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) hub, under the office of the President, where they will refine their ideas, develop prototypes, and take their innovations to the next level.

The highlight of the day was the students' showcase of their innovative ideas, where they presented their projects and demonstrated how their solutions could address real-world challenges and drive positive change. The students' creativity and ingenuity were on full display as they pitched their ideas, ranging from sustainable energy solutions to healthcare innovations and technological advancements.
Each presentation was met with enthusiasm and interest from the judges and audience, sparking lively discussions and debates. The students' passion and commitment to creating impact were evident, and their ideas had the potential to make a significant difference in various sectors. The showcase served as a testament to the power of innovation and the potential of young minds to shape a brighter future.
