KIU Western Campus Hosts Public Lecture Series on Infrastructure Safety

KIU, Western Campus - Kampala International University Western Campus (KIU-WC) recently hosted a Public Lecture Series, themed "The Infrastructure We Live In: Are They Truly Safe?" Organized by the Directorate of Higher Degrees and Research (DHDR) and the Directorate of Research, Innovations, Consultancy, and Extensions (DRICE),

The event, which took place at the Staff Common Room, brought together academic staff, postgraduate students, and members of the general public to deliberate on the safety and reliability of the infrastructures that support modern living. The lecture attracted around 50 participants physically and an additional 20 members who joined virtually, reflecting the broad interest in the topic.

The program began with a warm welcome from Prof. Patrick Maduabuchi Aja, Director of RICE, who welcomed attendees, emphasizing the importance of community and institutional responsibility in ensuring the safety of infrastructure.

Senior members of university management in attendance included Madam Asiati Mbabazi, University Secretary; Prof. Eric Mabonga, Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) for KIU WC, Dr. Bot Yakubu, ADVC for Finance and Administration; and Dr. Ibrahim Babangida Abubakar, ADVC for Academic and Research. The DVC gave the opening remarks, commending the Directorate for organizing such an important and timely Public Lecture Series that aligns with the university’s mission to advance research and public welfare.

In his presentation, Prof. Mustapha Muhammad Lawan, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, spoke on the sub-theme “Exploring the Safety of the Systems That Support Our Daily Lives.” In his engaging presentation, Prof. Lawan examined several case studies of structural collapses from Germany, Turkey, India, Uganda, and other countries, drawing lessons on the common causes of such disasters. He emphasized that ensuring the safety of infrastructure is a shared responsibility among engineers, builders, government authorities, and the general public.

Prof. Lawan cautioned that negligence often leads to tragedy and urged everyone to speak up when they notice signs of potential danger. He quoted, “Something you see, something you talk about,” encouraging individuals to report abnormalities such as cracks in buildings they occupy.

The presentation was followed by a lively question-and-answer session, where participants actively engaged the speaker with thought-provoking questions and contributions. The interactive discussion deepened understanding of how safety regulations, design standards, and public vigilance can help prevent infrastructure failures.

At the end of the event, Prof. Lawan was presented with a Certificate of Recognition by the University Secretary and the ADVC (A&R) on behalf of the university management, in appreciation of his impactful contribution. The Public Lecture Series concluded with a group photograph that captured the guest speaker, senior management, and participants, marking a successful and memorable academic engagement.

The event highlighted KIU’s ongoing commitment to fostering research-driven discussions that address real-life challenges and contribute to
