KIU Student Bags Gold Medal for Uganda at East Africa Karate Championships

KIU, Western Campus – Kampala International University (KIU) School of Law (SOL) at Western Campus recently launched its highly anticipated first edition of Law Week, marking a significant milestone in the institution's academic calendar. The two-day event, held on November 6 and 7, 2025, kicked off with a Solemn Law Procession, which commenced at the Engineering Block and culminated at the Administrative Block, setting the tone for a week of intellectual discourse and spirited competition.
The event, themed "Her Premier Law Week", was attended by key figures from the school, including Dr. Maria Umo, the Dean SOL, Dr. Richard Akwagiobe, Head of Department SOL, Csl. Goreth Ayebale, Csl. Victor Atwiine, Csl. Collins Mwesigye, and Barr. Aminu Bakori, and law students.
The inaugural debate competition, held at the University main hall, brought together two teams of talented students to deliberate on the topical issue: “The Concept of bail is unnecessary in Uganda as it fails in Uganda to strike the right balance between protecting human rights, safeguarding public safety, delivering justice and deterring crimes”. The teams presented compelling arguments, showcasing their exceptional research, critical thinking, and public speaking skills.
Firm A, comprising Bright Ahimbisibwe, Agaba Mwine Abaasa, Judith Atukunda, and Angella Natukunda, emerged victorious, scoring 1,025 points, while their opponents, Firm B; Gerald Agumenaitwe, Bridget Kyohangirwe, Patience Mugabirwe, and Baram Muhangi put up a valiant effort with 1,017 points. Judith Atukunda was adjudged the best orator in the debate competition, a testament to her exceptional oratory skills.

The second day featured a moot court competition, which struck a balance as Firm B won this round. Lucy Ainembabazi from Firm A emerged as the best orator. The moot court competition saw participants showcase their skills in a simulated court setting, with Firm A's Junior Agaba, Colonel Muhumuza, Lucy Ainembabazi, Filbert Abigaba, and Atony Tuhumwiire facing off against Firm B's Polyine Tumuheirwe, Arafah Asiimwe, Suzan Amutuhaire, and Hillary Happy. Firm A's witnesses, Robert Onyang and Comfort Komweru, and Ash Ssenyonjo and accessor, Florence Naturinda, and clerk, Allan Mujuni played crucial roles, while Firm B's witnesses, Prossy Basemera, Ignitious Buwaya, and Onesmus Ainebyoona, and assessor, Rossette Kabazeyo, also made significant contributions.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Maria Umo, the Dean SOL, lauded students for their active participation and thanked the organizing committee for making Law Week a success. "I encourage you to always show up once you are given an assignment. The next Law Week will be organized by students, and I'm confident it will be a great success," she said.
The two-day event concluded with an award ceremony, recognizing the winners of the debate and moot court competitions, best orators, and participants.
