Abdihafid Mustaf Elmi’s journey at Kampala International University (KIU) began in 2018, driven by a hunger for knowledge and a vision for personal growth. What started as a one-year Higher Education Certificate (HEC) quickly transformed into a five-year odyssey of learning, leadership, and self-discovery, leading to a Master’s Degree in Project Planning and Management.
For Abdihafid, KIU was never just a place to earn a degree, it was a launchpad for building discipline, character, and the skills needed to navigate a complex world.
“I came to KIU with a deep craving for knowledge and a high expectation for a colorful, life-changing experience. The HEC program taught me discipline, and every step after that built the foundation for who I am today,” he recalls.
Throughout his time at KIU, Abdihafid emerged as a natural leader. He served as Deputy Minister in the Guild Union, led the Somali Students Association, and represented KIU internationally as a KIU Ambassador to Somalia. He also took part in global forums, including an online conference with Manchester University on Social Protection and a continental discussion on Africa’s regionalization. His commitment to service and community earned him the Best Mobilizer Award, a testament to his ability to inspire, unite, and empower those around him.
Central to Abdihafid’s journey was the mentorship of Madam Christine Ainebyoona, University Campus Administrator, whose guidance he describes as invaluable.
“In the demanding world of student leadership, challenges don’t follow office hours. Madam Christine was always there, guiding us, providing clarity, and showing what true, empathetic leadership looks like. Her commitment was a cornerstone of my success,” he says.
As he prepares to graduate during KIU’s 32nd Graduation Ceremony on November 29, 2025, Abdihafid shares advice for fellow students:
“Your journey at KIU is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace every opportunity, engage with the diversity around you, and let this experience shape the leader you aspire to become.”
For Abdihafid Mustaf Elmi, KIU has been more than a university, it has been a stage for leadership, global engagement, and purpose-driven action. It is a place where knowledge, ambition, and opportunity converge to shape leaders ready to transform their communities and the world.
