KIU, Main Campus - On 29 November 2024, KIU participants Phiona Kayinza, Akanshemeza Jimmy, and Lynnette Masudio completed their Media Challenge Fellowship training programme at the Media Challenge Initiative.

Media Challenge Fellowship is a training program under the Media Challenge Initiative (MCI). MCI is a leading Ugandan non-profit youth media development organization that has, over the years, shaped the next generation of journalists tasked with transforming communities and the African narrative.

Kayinza, a 2024 Media Challenge fellow, credits the program for transforming her life.

“Joining the Media Challenge Initiative was a game-changer for me. It provided me with a platform to develop my skills, build my confidence, and connect with like-minded individuals who share my passion for storytelling,” she said, adding that the initiative also gave her a new perspective on the role of media in promoting positive change.

Above all, Kayinza noted that the fellowship provided her with hands-on training and mentorship from experienced journalists and media professionals.

“Though challenging, I had an incredible opportunity for growth and learning as I got the opportunity to work on real-world projects, receive feedback from my peers and mentors, and learn from industry experts,” she added.

Narrating the benefits of the highly sought-after training, Lynnette Masudio, a climate change activist, described the fellowship as eye-opening and empowering.

“I worked on real-world climate change stories, learned from seasoned mentors…It felt like being part of something bigger than myself,” she noted.

Moving forward, participants look forward to using skills obtained from the fellowship to create change through impactful and positive reporting.

“I will use my skills to craft stories highlighting climate action, especially in underserved communities through social media and digital platforms. I will create content that educates, engages, and inspires people to care about the planet,” Masudio added.

The Media Challenge Initiative can be compared to a tertiary institution that equips students with practical skills for journalistic career development. According to the organisation’s vision, the motivating idea holds that every young journalist, regardless of background, deserves an internship and an employment opportunity regardless of the "technical-know-who".
