KIU Receives COMS-A Full Membership Recognition

KIU Receives COMS-A Full Membership Recognition

KIU, Western Campus - On July 5th, 2026, Kampala International University, Western Campus (KIU-WC) was awarded the Certificate of Full Membership in the Consortium of Medical Schools–Africa (COMS-A) during the consortium’s Annual General Meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This recognition highlights KIU’s growing contribution to advancing medical education, research, and collaboration across the continent.

The certificate was formally presented on Friday, July 17th, 2026, to Assoc. Prof. Eric Mabonga, Deputy Vice Chancellor of KIU-WC, by Dr. Maxwell Okello, Dean of the School of Clinical Medicine and Dentistry at KIU-WC and Coordinator of Deans of Medical Schools in Uganda to COMS-A. The presentation was witnessed by Dr. Andrew Onchonga Nyakundi, Director of Quality Assurance and Monitoring.

Receiving the certificate on behalf of the University, Assoc. Prof. Mabonga described the recognition as a significant milestone in KIU’s pursuit of excellence in medical education, research, and international collaboration. He emphasized that the achievement reflects KIU’s commitment to strengthening medical training, promoting innovation, and producing competent healthcare professionals equipped to address Africa’s evolving health challenges.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our leadership, faculty, staff, students, clinical partners, and stakeholders who continue to uphold excellence in medical education. It further motivates us to strengthen collaborations that advance healthcare training, research, and innovation across the continent,” he said.

Assoc. Prof. Mabonga further noted that KIU’s membership in COMS-A opens new opportunities for expanded academic partnerships, knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and engagement with leading medical schools across Africa.

Presenting the certificate, Dr. Okello explained that KIU’s full membership goes beyond institutional recognition, describing it as an acknowledgement of the University’s contribution to the advancement of medical education and healthcare training in Africa. He highlighted that COMS-A membership enables institutions to collaborate in curriculum development, faculty and student exchanges, research initiatives, quality improvement, and the sharing of best practices in medical education.

“As a member of COMS-A, KIU joins a continental network of medical schools committed to improving the quality of healthcare education through collaboration, innovation, and research,” Dr. Okello remarked. He added that the recognition strengthens KIU’s visibility within Africa’s medical education community and positions the University to participate more actively in initiatives aimed at building the capacity of health professionals and improving healthcare outcomes across the continent.
