KIU Guild Union Parliament Candidates present their 2023 Manifestos

KIU, Main Campus-Candidates running for the 2023/2024 Guid Union Parliament were each given a chance to campaign before a crowd of students that gathered in the main Campus gardens on Tuesday,11th April 2023. The open-air campaigns also marked the end of campaigns ahead of today's poll.

Voting kicked off at 9:00 AM and will close at 4:00 PM today.

There was excitement as students expressed support for their favorite candidates characterized by chanting various slogans, dancing, and blowing vuvuzelas.

Each candidate was allowed three minutes to share manifestos with their potential electorates who eagerly listened and later asked questions.

Lilian Asiimwe, a candidate running for the Girls Hostel constituency seat and a student of International Relations said she was ready to obey, receive ideas and complaints as well advocate for change to what is not right once voted into power.

Memory Namukwenda, the candidate aspiring to represent  students with disability assured electorates that once supported to success, “The rights of the disabled personnel would be observed."

The most competitive constituency in this election is the school of law where seven candidates want to become members of the Guild Union Parliament. One of the candidates, Linda Crystal Namaganda a third-year student promised to make KIU a better campus for all.

According to Michael Sselwanga Mukembo, the Secretary General of the Electoral Commission, these open-air campaigns were mainly conducted to expose the candidates to their supporters.

 He said that these campaigns met their objectives though it was lesser than expected in terms of attendance because some students were still away in the Easter holidays. Those in the school of the law were mourning the loss of their fellow student.

Students are today voting for the candidates they witnessed yesterday. Winners will be declared immediately after the voting exercise stops.
