KIU, Western Campus—On Saturday, December 7th, 2024, Kampala International University's (KIU) western campus community joined forces to mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), with a call to action to end gender-based violence against women and girls (VAWG).
THE EVENT IN DETAIL
The day's activities began with a march through the streets of Ishaka, Bushenyi, where participants held placards and banners with messages condemning GBV. The march was followed by a series of informative sessions and panel discussions on strategies to end gender-based violence.
Professor Eric Mabonga, Deputy Vice Chancellor of KIU Western Kampus, emphasized the importance of promoting a culture of respect and inclusivity. "How we behave reflects who we are," he said. "This campaign should reach home, take it out of campus, and we should have safer families so our country can grow in morals and good values."
KIU'S COMMITMENT TO GENDER EQUALITY
KIU has been a pioneer in promoting gender equality and combating gender-based violence. The university's O3 plus project has been instrumental in promoting comprehensive sexual education and raising awareness of gender-based violence on campuses. Additionally, KIU has established a gender desk, which provides support and counseling services to students who have experienced gender-based violence.
FREE HEALTH SERVICES PROVIDED
As part of the event, free HIV testing and counseling, free condom and lubricant distribution, and free cervical cancer screening were provided at the CHAII clinic, KIU Teaching Hospital and Research (KIUTHR). The services were availed by over 200 students and community members.
THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that started on November 25 and will conclude on December 10. The campaign is a call to action to end gender-based violence in women and girls (VAWG).
A CALL TO ACTION FOR ALL
As KIU continues to play a leading role in promoting gender equality and combating gender-based violence, the university community remains committed to creating a safer and more supportive environment for all. The event served as a call to action for students, staff, and the wider community to join forces in the fight against gender-based violence.
