KIU, Main Campus – Uganda’s only Olympic medalists at the Tokyo Games, Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo will this evening run in the 5000 meters heats as they begin their quest for gold in the race.

The two won silver and bronze in the 10,000 meters on Friday but were upset by Ethiopian Selemon Barega, who outwitted and outpaced them in the last 400 meters of the race to bag the gold medal.

Now, probably Uganda’s last chance of clinching gold at this year’s Olympics hinges on the performance of the two top athletes, who will be overwhelming favourites to line up for the final on Friday evening.

5000 meters world record holder Cheptegei will be under a lot of pressure to win gold at the Olympics to live up to his favourite tag and stake claim to the tag of Uganda’s greatest athlete of all time.
