KIU, Western Campus – Gift Wagaba (extreme right), a Bachelor of Pharmacy student, beat ten other participants to win the KIU Western Campus Chess Grandmaster Tournament, which was taking place at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).
The tournament started on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 and ended on Friday, May 17th and was played every Saturday to allow students to take care of their academic commitments.

According to Emmanuel Lubangakene, the chairperson of the organizing Committee, the tournament was successful.
“It went on well. We used a round robin system for pairing players, after which each player was to play every other person in a best of three series and the person with the highest amount of points at the end of all the rounds won it,” Lubangakene said.
He explained that the tournament enables the students to exercise their skills in chess in a competitive environment which helps them to better their game.
Lubangakene also revealed that the winner won 50,000 shillings, the first runner-up 25,000 shillings, the second runner-up 15,000 shillings and the fourth-placed player won 10,000 shillings.
