KIU, MAIN CAMPUS - On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, postgraduate students of the January 2025 intake participated in a customized orientation ceremony held at the Kampala International University (KIU) Iddi Basajjabalaba Memorial Library. Organised by the Directorate of Higher Degrees and Research (DHDR), the event aimed to familiarize students with the university's norms and operational procedures.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Israel O. Obaroh, Director of Higher Degrees and Research (DHDR), welcomed the students and briefed them on the research presentation process, format, and publication requirements for both Master's and PhD students.
"At KIU, we emphasize quality research work," Prof. Obaroh stated. "Public hearing forms are available on the DHDR portal. Chapter-by-chapter presentations are required, except for Law students. After each presentation, make necessary corrections. If you cannot present in person, we offer online presentations, but the final presentation (viva voce) must be physical," he said.
Prof. Obaroh also encouraged Master's and PhD students to focus on publishing their papers and articles as they work on their research. "Before graduation, Master's students must have two article publications, while PhD students require four publications, with at least one in the Scopus Indexed Journals."
To ensure a smooth academic journey, Prof. Obaroh advised students to work diligently, as scores below 50% would result in a retake. He also recommended participating in research and publication skill-building workshops regularly held at the university.
"Publication is crucial for maintaining visibility in academic journals, LinkedIn, and Academia," Prof. Obaroh emphasized. "Even as a professor, it is essential to continue contributing to knowledge through publications," he added.
Dr. Victor Fakuade Olubusayo, Head of the Department of Distance Learning, urged students to register on the student portal and access internet services at the postgraduate building. He highlighted the availability of all programs on the e-learning platform and the blended learning calendar.
“As you navigate your academic journey with us, register on our student portal and stay on track with our blended learning calenda,” he added.
Gad Mbahweza, Audit Officer, cautioned students against using agent banking services,"We handle financial registration; ensure you are fully registered and avoid agent banking, as they often fail to capture details accurately".
Mbahweza also addressed exam clearance procedures, "Pay on time to avoid late payment charges. The grace period is 45 days from the semester's beginning. Note that all Master's and PhD students, including those on scholarship programs, must pay research fees".
Regarding online finance clearance and bank transfers, Mbahweza clarified, "You can email the finance department, ensuring your details are accurately captured. Bank transfers are acceptable as long as your particulars are well-documented".
Mbahweza explained the procedure for applying for a dead semester. "Communicate early with your Head of Department; it is free of charge. However, after 45 days, a 25% charge applies," he warned.
Geofrey Tumusiime, Postgraduate e-resource librarian, thanked the students for choosing KIU, the leading private university in Uganda. He outlined library rules and regulations, encouraging students to obtain library cards for easy access.
"The Postgraduate and Research Library is located on the third floor, offering excellent reading materials, computers, and an online library to support your research," Tumusiime added.
As the January 2025 postgraduate students embark on their academic journey at KIU, they are poised to excel in research and scholarly publications. With a strong emphasis on quality research work, KIU fosters a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and knowledge sharing, ultimately contributing to the advancement of knowledge.
