KIU AMR Club Hosts Annual Run to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance

KIU, Western Campus - Kampala International University Antimicrobial Resistance (KIU- AMR) Club held its third Annual Awareness Run, under the theme “Educate, Advocate, and Act Now.” The event kicked off at the university’s basketball court, drawing participants across the Ishaka Community and beyond who came together to raise awareness of the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Jonans Tusiimire, the president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU), who led the run, expressed gratitude to KIU for its efforts in advocacy for such a cause. He acknowledged the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (CBOT) for his continuous efforts in building strong institutional structures that have empowered the university to thrive and impact the community despite various challenges. Dr. Tusimire emphasized that activities like the AMR Run are vital in uniting students, staff, and the community to take action against pressing health threats.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of KIU Western Campus, Assoc. Prof. Eric Mabonga, also applauded the AMR Club’s efforts, highlighting the importance of involving the community in raising awareness. He pledged ongoing support from the university, reaffirming its commitment to fostering student-led initiatives that address critical health issues.

The patron of the AMR Club Dr Chans Daniel Mwandah extended the call to the student community to actively engage in this fight.

This year’s AMR Awareness Run being the third edition, featured interactive activities, including quizzes to educate participants on the dangers of AMR and the importance of safe medication practices. The event extended beyond the KIU campus, with a strong turnout from the Ishaka metropolitan area, reflecting the university’s commitment to community engagement. The AMR Club has been actively spearheading initiatives that promote the responsible use of medicines among students, staff, and the broader community, ensuring that critical health information reaches those who need it most.

Kampala International University and its affiliated Kampala International University Teaching Hospital and Research (KIUTHR) continue to lead in public health advocacy. By supporting student-led programs and promoting research-driven solutions, KIU remains at the forefront of addressing health challenges in Uganda and beyond. The university’s initiatives, such as the AMR Run, align with its mission to inspire positive change, emphasizing the role of education, advocacy, and community action in solving global health crises.

As the event concluded, participants left with a renewed commitment to combat antimicrobial resistance and to act as advocates for the responsible use of medications, ensuring a healthier future for all.
