KIU, Main Campus - Mahad Balyamujura, the president of KIU Debate Union has been voted the new National Coordinator for the University Debate Presidents Council.
The intellectual gladiator was overwhelmingly voted on Tuesday, 22nd June in a virtual election by the majority of the Debate Union Presidents from all Universities in Uganda.
Immediately after being declared winner, Balyamujura pledged to work with his erstwhile competitor Joshua Kingdom, whom he said gave him a good run for his money. He also called for teamwork and commitment towards transforming debate in universities.
"And to everyone, let's get together, all our strengths, ideas together and work towards what's best for the Council and debate in our university environments," Balyamujura said.
In his manifesto, Balyamujura promises to work towards promoting justice and fairness in all debate activities especially when it comes to consideration for participation in different debate tournaments. He intends to engage different debate stakeholders to establish inclusion and equal participation for all.
He also wants to create fair criteria for choosing adjudicators for different debate tournaments in order to end claims of bias that have been raised at previous tournaments. He also plans to strengthen the relationship between the Debate Presidents Council and their partners as well as devising ways of funding and supporting different debate activities in all universities that subscribe to the council.
The University Debate Presidents Council is a platform that brings together all Debate Presidents from all tertiary institutions in Uganda. The head of the council is the National Coordinator who is voted by debate Presidents from all institutions in the country.
