KIU, Main Campus- Law Students from all years are today battling for the ultimate prize in the Moot competition organised by Kanyeihamba & Co. Advocates a student-led law firm in partnership with the KIU Department of Clinical Legal Education (CLE).
The competition which is taking place at the sixth floor of the Iddi Basajjabala Memorial Library began with preliminary rounds at 9 am and is set to go till 5 pm with finals later in the afternoon.
The participating students have been divided into 10 teams with five teams acting as applicants and the other five comprising of respondents.
Dr. Olawunmi Obisesan, Head of the Department CLE has expressed gratitude to Kanyeihamba &Co advocates for standing out to organize the moot competition that she hopes will equip Students with the art of lawyering.
"Kanyeihamba & Co. Advocates one of the law firms that has stood out in Kampala International University over the years. This firm holds an internal quiz competition for the Law Students' aimed at introducing them to the art of lawyering and preparing them for moots," she said.
"This initiative is designed to help students develop a solid foundation in legal knowledge, foster healthy competition, and improve their understanding of core legal principles in their education," she added.
According to Zubair Kanyereketo, the firm manager of Kanyeihamba & Co.Advocates, the main goal of the moot competition is to transfer legal knowledge from theory into practice.
"We want to inspire law students into the practical field of the law. We also want to transform what is taught in lectures into practice," he said.
Kanyereketo added that "several advocates and distinguished practitioners, some Alumni of KIU will be joining in to grace the occasion during the finals."
Among the distinguished guests is Fahad Kyazze an Advocate of the courts of Judicature in Uganda and a practising lawyer at Luzige, Lubega, Kavuma & Co. Advocates, Najia Nakimuli an advocate at Nabukenya Mulalira and Co-advocates and Trinity legal Aid Foundation Uganda.
Others include Rev.Counsel Samson Maliisa of Kitimbo Associated Advocates and Lecturer King Ceasor University. Nicholas Agaba,a Lawyer at Soita & Co.Advocates and ca Certified Mediator with membership at the Arbitration and Mediation Society Uganda (AMSU).
The winners, first and second runner's up of Friday's moot competition will be awarded accordingly. There is also an award for the Competition's Best Oralist.
