7:00 PM: Cape Verde vs Uganda

The Ugandan national basketball team, the Silverbacks go into this evening’s quarter-final clash with Cape Verde with both eyes set on a historic semi-final berth at the Afrobasket.

The Silverbacks had never won a single game at their previous two Afrobasket tournaments but defeated Cameroon in the group stages before emphatically seeing off title favourites Nigeria in the quarter-final playoff with an 80-68 win.

They now head into the Cape Verde clash with the knowledge that a win will make them the most successful Ugandan team ever, and they will take comfort from the impressive result they got against the island nation in their last game.

During their Group E qualifier for the Afrobasket last year, Uganda topped Cape Verde 101-98, in a game that Ishmail Wainwright led the way with a whopping 36 points.

He will be expected to step up again today to steward a team that has shown great resolve and desire to win against the odds.
