KIU, MAIN CAMPUS - Kampala International University (KIU) Main Campus welcomed its newest students during an orientation ceremony held at the Main Hall on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
In his keynote speech, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammed Ngoma advised the freshmen to focus on their studies and be self-driven, emphasizing that academia is the cardinal reason they enrolled at the university.
"When you decided to come to KIU, the leading private university in Uganda, you made the right decision. So, it is upon you to make it happen. We need to see you succeed," Prof. Ngoma encouraged.
He also cautioned students against misusing their mobile phones, urging them to use their devices wisely and limit their screen time. “Some of you are addicted to your mobile phones. Learn to use them wisely and limit phone time accordingly,” he stressed.
Prof. Ngoma's remarks were echoed by Dr. Mundu Mustafa, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Finance and Administration, who welcomed the freshmen and encouraged them to work hard.
Dr. Jacob Eneji Ashibi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs, advised students to be disciplined, adhere to university policies, and surround themselves with positive influences.
"As the saying goes, show me your friends and I will tell you who you are. I urge you to disassociate from people who will not help you grow," Dr. Ashibi said.
Ms. Christine Ainebyoona, the Campus Administrator, emphasized the importance of maintaining a good image, developing leadership skills through associations, and dressing decently.
Ms. Shakiro Iluku, the Dean of Students Affairs, welcomed students to the university and introduced them to the Department, which she noted is available to address any student queries, including visa inquiries.
The freshmen appreciated the university's efforts to brief them on the university culture and for welcoming them warmly.
Emilly Murungi, a freshman student in the Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration programme, commended KIU's organized administration system.
Asked why she chose KIU out of many other universities, Murungi said, “After taking an additional year in vacation, I wanted a university that had an early intake without waiting for August as it is with most universities. Fortunately, KIU had a January intake and I did not have to wait”.
Jonathan Walusimbi, a student of Bachelor of Laws, said he chose KIU due to its reputation for producing top-notch legal practitioners.
"KIU is recognized in the country as the best university for law students. I look up to several KIU alumni like Benjamin Katana and Alfred Muyaga, who have made an impact in the law fraternity," Walusimbi said.
The orientation ceremony marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for KIU's newest students. With words of wisdom from the Vice Chancellor and other university officials, the freshmen were encouraged to prioritize their studies, develop positive habits, and make the most of their time at KIU.
