KIU Western Campus Hosting Federation of Uganda Medical Students Associations General Assembly


KIU, Western Campus – KIU Western Campus is currently hosting the Federation of Uganda Medical Students Associations (FUMSA) General Assembly, which brings together all medical student associations from various universities in Uganda.

The universities that are attending the General Assembly include KIU, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Kabale University, Makerere University, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Kabale University, Soroti University, Kabale University, King Ceasar University and Busitema University.

The assembly, which is being held under the theme, “Preventive Medicine a cornerstone for Health Promotion”, began on Friday October 7 and is ending on Sunday October 9.

Day 2 of the assembly was graced, among others, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of KIU Western Campus Prof. Frank Mugisha Kaharuza, the president of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) Dr. Sam Oledo, Prof Vidiya, the Associate Professor for Microbiology at KIU, the president of FUMSA Boniface Osodi and the president of Association of Medical Students at KIU (AMSKIU) Allan Kambale.

Prof. Kaharuza, in his speech, gave students insight about the importance of disease prevention, control and eradication and how medical students can achieve it as health workers.

Prof. Vidiya taught students about the role of immunology in disease prevention, talking about the role of immunization in the eradication of diseases like small pox.

Outgoing FUMSA president Osodi talked about the achievements he and his team have made like opening up an account with UMA SACCO, where money garnered from grants given to members’ projects can be saved at an interest rate of 9% per annum as well as signing MoU’s with Denmark and Norway to allow FUMSA members benefit from an exchange program with universities from both countries.

AMSKIU president Kambale hailed the event as a success thus far and thanked the KIU administration for the hospitality shown to all the delegates from the attending universities.

“All the delegates have been put up in different hotels around Ishaka and they have been accorded all meals and I would like to thank the university for that. All delegates are really pleased with the hospitality shown to them,” Kambale told this website.

The General Assembly will hold elections for the incoming FUMSA administration tomorrow Sunday October 7, listen to keynote addresses after which the delegates will wind down at the FUMSA Dinner which will be held at Meridian Hotel in Bushenyi.
