KIU, Main Campus – Kampala International University emerged victorious at the 2025 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Competition on Saturday, March 22, 2025, after defeating Cavendish University in the finals.

Manzi Mark, a celebrated alumnus and lecturer at the School of Law, expertly guided the KIU team, comprising Changu Banda, Faith Asiimwe, and Patricia Keem, to victory.

The team excelled throughout the competition, achieving the highest preliminary round score (81.1%) against Makerere University, Islamic University of Uganda, and Cavendish University before winning against Cavendish University in the finals.

Changu Banda won the Best Oralist Award after her exceptional performance helped team KIU claim the ultimate prize.

“I should mention that being recognized as the Best Oralist was an honour. I was surprised and full of joy at the same time when I was announced,” she admitted.

“I thank our God Almighty for the victory. This journey has been nothing short of incredible and a learning experience. From the countless hours of research and preparation to the sleepless nights and early morning rehearsals, every moment was worth it,” she added.

Her teammate, Faith Asiimwe, said the victory left her “utterly speechless and overwhelmed with joy.”

“The sense of pride and accomplishment I feel cannot be described. We’ve proven to ourselves and everyone else that our hard work, perseverance, and passion have paid off. This moment is unforgettable,” she added.

KIU’s coach, Mark Manzi, said, “Winning a moot competition as a coach is a deeply rewarding and emotional encounter, filled with pride, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment. This was made possible by the support of the HOD CLE and the School of Law fraternity.”

Dr. Olawunmi Obisesan, the Head of the Department (HOD) for Clinical Legal Education, said KIU’s victory in the National Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Competition solidifies the university’s reputation for academic excellence and advocacy skills.

“This victory boosts our global presence by sending us to the Regional Rounds in South Africa and enhances practical legal training for our students. It will inspire current and future students to pursue excellence while showcasing the strength of our university and academic programs,” she said.

She added, “It opens doors for collaborations and further opportunities in space and international law, setting the stage for continued success on the global stage. Congratulations to Changu Banda, Asiimwe Faith, Keem Patricia, and Coach Manzi Mark for their dedication. We’re confident our team will excel both at the regional and international rounds.”

KIU will proudly represent Uganda in the Regional Rounds, which will take place in Pretoria, South Africa, from May 22 to 23, 2025. The winner of this round will advance to the International Rounds in Australia later this year.
