KIU, Main Campus- The KIU Woodball team finished second despite displaying a spectacular performance at the 14th edition of the Uganda Woodball Open Championship held at Soroti University, Eastern Uganda, on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October 2024.
KIU was beaten by the Prisons Woodball Club to the ultimate prize, marking the second time in three months that the university team had been denied gold by the prisoners, who also claimed the president's cup in July.
The 14th edition of the Uganda Woodball Open Championship attracted over 40 teams from across East Africa as Uganda continued to dominate the championship. KIU edged Makerere University for second place.
The team was greatly inspired by unmatchable individual performances from Joel Chote, Tonny Ssekyene, Ssekidde Bruno, Gwaaka Brian, and the new wonder boy in the team, Timothy Suuna.
"It was a wonderful performance from the team, and we are happy with the silver given the toughness of this tournament," said Joel Munyendoh, the sports administrator who travelled with the team.
"That aside, we have picked up a number of lessons that we intend to use to win gold in our next outing. We are taking back to the drawing board to establish ways on how to become the best," he added.
Munyendoh disclosed that two KIU players, Tonny Ssekyene and Gilles Amanyire, have been selected to represent Uganda in the Woodball World Cup due in China in the middle of October.
