KIU MAIN CAMPUS: As Kampala International University (KIU) prepares for its 30th graduation ceremony on November 23rd, 2024, Livingston Muhumuza, a law graduand, reflects on what he calls, “a transformative journey" at the university.
While pursuing his Bachelor of Laws, Muhumuza shares that the Faculty of Law played a crucial role in shaping his education. He has no regrets about choosing KIU, the leading private university in Uganda, over public institutions.
“The faculty's expertise and willingness to mentor students created a supportive environment, I particularly appreciated the emphasis on interactive learning, like case studies and group discussions, which made the material more relatable and applicable,” Muhumuza says.
Muhumuza also highlights that the program provided a strong theoretical foundation while developing practical skills.
“Engaging with diverse legal concepts in classes challenged my critical thinking and helped me develop a nuanced understanding of the law,” he adds.
One of Muhumuza’s key moments at KIU was participating in moot court competitions during his first year. This experience, filled with weeks of preparation, supportive cheers from classmates, and a sense of accomplishment after emerging second runners-up, was a defining experience for him.
“Looking back, that moot trial was not just about competition. It encapsulated the spirit of KIU’s law school an environment of learning, growth, and camaraderie,” Muhumuza reflects.
He adds that these competitions honed his advocacy skills, boosted his confidence in public speaking, and inspired him to think about the broader implications of law in society.
Now as he takes the next step in his career, Muhumuza has already started his Bar Course in Legal Practice at the Law Development Centre (LDC).
“My immediate goal is to prepare for and successfully pass the bar exam to become a licensed attorney,” he stresses.
As a parting message, Muhumuza encourages his colleagues and fellow graduands to embrace lifelong learning, network actively, stay resilient, give back to the community, prioritize well-being, uphold ethics, and, above all, stay true to their passions.
