KIU, Western Campus – To most people who knew Dr Peter Mugisha Sebishimbo, the news of his death from COVID-19 came as an utter shock, not only because of his age but because it is hard for many to stomach because of his enchanting character.

The 38-year old dermatologist succumbed to COVID-19 in the early hours of Monday morning at Mbarara Regional referral Hospital, being among the 7 health workers declared as victims of COVID-19 from September 6.

Dr Mugisha was a specialist and lecturer with the Department of Internal Medicine as a dermatologist at KIU Teaching Hospital since September 2014 and the hospital administration was quick to offer its heartfelt condolences at the demise of a health professional at the peak of his career.

“On behalf of the staff and students of Kampala International University- Teaching Hospital and my own behalf, I wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Dr Mugisha Peter Semishimbo,” read a condolence letter written by the Executive Director of KIU Teaching Hospital, Prof. Robinson Ssebuufu.

“Dr Mugisha was a hardworking, honest, focused and principled person who loved his work and passionately performed his duties to the very best of his knowledge. He was a team player who was focused on achieving organizational goals,” Prof Ssebuufu eulogized.

KIU Teaching Hospital contributed 1,000,000 shillings towards the burial expenses of Dr Mugisha, though the burial, which occurred earlier today, was taken over by Ministry of Health health workers because of the high risk of infection posed by COVID-19.

Dr Peter Mugisha Sebishimbo held a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery as well as a Masters of Medicine in Dermatology from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

He started teaching as an assistant lecturer at MUST in 2009 before joining KIU Teaching Hospital as an assistant lecturer and specialist in dermatology in 2014. At the time of his death, he had amassed 11 years’ teaching and clinical experience in dermatology.

He hailed from Rukarara Sub-county in Kanungu district and is survived by a wife and children.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
