President Museveni Honours Tokyo Olympics Medallists

President Yoweri Museveni has honoured the athletes who won medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan during a ceremony held at Kololo Independence Grounds on August 11th.

Joshua Cheptegei, who won gold in the 5000 meters and silver in the 10,000 meters, Peruth Chemutai, who won gold in the women’s 3000 meters steeplechase, and Jacob Kiplimo, who won bronze in the 10,000 meters, were each awarded a car for their exploits.

The ceremony was attended by the country’s entire Olympics team and officials as well as former Olympians, politicians and government officials.

In addition to the cars, Museveni promised to build each of the 3 medallists’ parents a house and also reiterated his commitment to the monthly cash payments he promised athletes who win medals for the country at the continental and global level.

Uganda had her best-ever showing at an Olympic Games in Tokyo, after winning two gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal, which catapulted them to second position in Africa and 37th in the world, ahead of powerhouses South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria.
