In today’s fast paced and ever evolving world, leadership skills are key to achieving success. Recognizing the importance of these skills, a group of students from Kampala International University (KIU) recently participated in the Balunywa Leadership Academy, a life changing experience that empowered them with knowledge, skills, and the mindset to thrive in their future endeavors.
The opportunity for KIU students to attend the prestigious academy began with a heartfelt letter. Justus Tugume, a third-year law student and Guild Member of Parliament for the School of Law, wrote to Prof. Wasswa Balunywa, the Executive Director of the Balunywa Leadership Academy, requesting assistance for students who couldn’t afford the leadership program. Moved by the appeal, Prof. Balunywa generously offered to sponsor the students, giving them a chance to participate in the month-long training camp held in Iganga alongside other youth from across Uganda.
During the academy, students delved into practical topics including emotional intelligence, self-awareness, time management, effective leadership, and handling criticism.
"Before attending the academy, I thought leadership was mainly about politics. But I learned that leadership touches every area of life it’s about becoming a better person, a responsible citizen, and a positive influence in the workplace and society," Polycarp Wanakoli,a KIU student who also participated in the training
The students were also paired with experienced mentors who provided personalized guidance, feedback, and support. This mentorship model allowed participants to gain self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and a clearer understanding of ethical decision-making and leading by example.
The impact of the training was immediate and profound. Many students reported personal growth and improved academic performance after attending the program.
In appreciation of Prof. Balunywa’s support, Justus Tugume and his team presented him with a gift at the KIU main campus, following his recent training session with the university’s administrative staff.
