KIU Holds Orientation for August Intake Postgraduate Students

KIU, MAIN CAMPUS- Kampala International University (KIU) on 13th September 2024, hosted its Postgraduate Orientation at the university's main campus in Kansanga, Kampala, marking a significant step for new students as they begin their academic journey.

The event aimed to equip postgraduate students with essential information to thrive in their chosen fields and highlighted the available support systems from various departments to ensure their success.

Speaking at the event, Prof Omolara Oluwaniyi the Director of Quality Assurance emphasized the importance of active participation in the learning process. He urged students to take ownership of their education, encouraging them to engage in extra work, participate in group discussions, and consistently reflect on their progress.

“You are here to become masters in your field,” he noted, adding that Quality Assurance will provide the necessary support, but the students are ultimately accountable for their learning.

Dr. Vidya Sankarapandian, the Director of Academic Affairs, emphasized the importance of academic registration and regular class attendance, noting that students must attend at least 70% of their classes to be eligible for exams.

“My office is open for consultations to assist you in navigating your academic journey at KIU,” Dr. Sankarapandian assured the students.

In addition, the Deputy University Librarian, Juma Maria Gorrety, introduced students to the services provided by the IBML library, including access to physical and electronic resources such as MYLOFT. She encouraged students to leverage the library’s resources to enhance their research skills.

Shedding light on research, Dr. Willy Turyahikayo, Deputy Director of Higher Degrees, took students through the research process, emphasizing the importance of thorough documentation and the seven steps of research, from presenting a topic to making conclusions. He encouraged postgraduate students to reach out if they encounter any challenges.

Regarding grants, Dr. Gaurav Bajpay, Director of Grants, shared valuable insights about the grants available to KIU students, emphasizing the need to acquire grant-writing skills.

 Meanwhile, Alex Kayabula, Administrator at the Directorate of Human Resources (DHR), walked students through the DHR online portal and the process of enrollment.

As the orientation went on, the Dean of Students Affairs, Shakiro Iluku Joyce, congratulated the students on their bold decision to pursue postgraduate education, reminding them to prioritize their security. The Campus Administrator, Christine Ainebyoona, also encouraged students to reach out for assistance whenever necessary, emphasizing the importance of timely tuition payment to avoid inconveniences.

Highlighting the event, Dr. Jacob Ashibi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) in charge of Academic Affairs, further reinforced the university’s commitment to supporting its postgraduate students.

With several take-home messages from different departments, the new students left with a wealth of knowledge and a sense of belonging to the KIU community. With a clear roadmap ahead, they are well-positioned to achieve academic and professional excellence.
