On Thursday, July 18th, and Friday, July 19th, 2024, the Centre of Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CoEEI) at Kampala International University (KIU) conducted a hands-on training session on Liquid Dishwash. Held at the Iddi Basajjabalaba Memorial Library, 5th Floor, the training aimed to equip students with practical skills for entrepreneurial ventures and self-sufficiency.

According to Dr. Mariam Oyedeji Amusa the Manager of CoEEI, this training aimed to equip students with practical skills for entrepreneurial ventures and self-sufficiency.

She adds that the primary objective of the training was to provide students with the knowledge and practical skills required to produce liquid dishwash.

“This training was intended to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among the students, enabling them to potentially start their small-scale businesses. The training aligns with the Centre's mission to promote innovation and entrepreneurship through hands-on learning experiences,” Dr. Mariam Oyedeji stated.

Opening the workshop, Dr. Mundu Mustafa, the Assistant Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation, Consultancy, and Extension (DVC-RICE), encouraged students to utilize the skills and opportunities provided by the training.

"Money is actually available. Funders are looking for ideas, and they want to fund those ideas, including from students like yourselves. Many of your colleagues have already received small grants," Dr. Mundu said.

"We're also going to ask you, if there's any other innovation that we have not brought forward, please share it with us while filling out the feedback forms. You still have the chance to bring your ideas to life," Dr. Mundu stated.

Dr. Mundu further motivated students to come up with startup ideas, ensuring them of CoEEL’s support in developing these ideas. He assured students that funding should not be a concern.

He also highlighted the opportunities available at the Office of the Director of Grants, where students receive training and assistance in writing small grants for business ventures.

The training session saw an encouraging turnout, with over 168 students participating. The substantial attendance over the two days indicates a strong interest among the student body in acquiring practical and marketable skills. The diversity of participants, ranging from different academic disciplines, underscores the broad appeal and relevance of the training.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Students appreciated the practical approach and the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning. Many expressed interest in applying the skills learned to start their small-scale production businesses, which aligns with the Centre's objective of nurturing entrepreneurial mindsets.

According to Lotee Kizito Loitakori, a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management student, the training has provided him with practical skills and knowledge on how to make liquid dish soap.

"I have learned about the ingredients, equipment, and processes involved in making high-quality dish soap," he stated.

He adds that he plans to use the knowledge and skills gained from the training to start his own small business producing and selling liquid dish soap.

“I will also use this knowledge to create different variations of dish soap, such as scented or eco-friendly options, to cater for different customer preferences. Additionally, I will use the training to improve my understanding of the market and develop effective marketing strategies to promote my products. Overall, I am excited to apply what I have learned and start my entrepreneurial journey in the soap-making industry,” he explained.

Encouraged by the positive response, the Centre plans to continue offering similar hands-on training sessions on a weekly basis. Future sessions will cover a variety of skills, including but not limited to soap making, candle making, household materials, bakeries etc. These initiatives aim to broaden the skill set of students, preparing them for diverse entrepreneurial opportunities.

The hands-on training on liquid dishwash production was a resounding success, evidenced by the high turnout and positive feedback from participants. Our Centre (CoEEI) remains committed to fostering entrepreneurial skills and innovation among KIU students. By continuing to offer practical training sessions, the Centre aims to empower students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the entrepreneurial landscape.

The training was free of charge, and participants received certificates of participation upon completion.
