COVID-19 Updates: Uganda Applies for 9 Million COVID-19 Vaccine Doses

KIU, Main Campus - Uganda, through the Ministry of Health, has requested 9 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine amid rising new cases in the country.

A statement issued by the ministry said that the vaccines will cover 20 percent of the country’s total population. 

“Plans are underway to secure additional doses of the vaccine to cover more people,” the statement adds.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health, through GAVI (Global Alliances for Vaccines and Immunization), applied to secure the COVID-19 vaccine from drugmaker AstraZeneca.

The ministry further warned that the COVID-19 crisis in the country is getting worse, encouraging the public to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Uganda on Thursday registered 671 new COVID-19 cases bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 25,730. 1 new COVID-19 death was also registered.

As it is, Uganda has registered a total of 9,605 recoveries and 220 deaths since the index case was reported on March 21.
