KIU, Main Campus – A significant number of countries around the world have adopted the social distancing guidance from the World Health Organization. One of the consequence to this action has been the rise of the virtual office. At KIU alone, business has progressed as usual as multiple managerial meetings have been held virtually.

Furthermore, the new state of affairs has forced many to take their monetary transactions online. Unfortunately, this activity has attracted cyber criminals, as unsuspecting users have become their fresh new targets.

According to a report by BBC-AFRICA, 513 corona virus emails are sent to email users daily containing a link that when clicked, takes the unsuspecting users to a page that collects their log in details amongst other information like their financials and social media accounts.

Anyone and everyone is vulnerable to these attacks. Most recently, Microsoft took part in an operation to fight cyber crime by taking down Necurs, a botnet network that infected over nine million computers around the world. Botnets are used by cyber criminals to remotely take over internet connected devices and install malicious software.

The KIU community is advised to take extra precaution on protecting their internet devices, especially in these times when cyber crime is on the rise. In the follow up to this article, we will run through a series of ways that you can protect yourself from cyber attacks.
