KIU Main Campus - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the African Cup of Nations tournament to January 2022 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This was announced on Tuesday in a video conference.

‘’After consultation with stakeholders and taking into consideration the current global situation, the tournament has been rescheduled for January 2022. The date for the final tournament and the remaining matches of the qualifiers will be communicated in the due course,” CAF confirmed in a statement.

The 33rd edition of the tournament is set to take place in January and February next year in Cameroon.

“Health is our number one priority. We must remain vigilant,” said CAF president Ahmad Ahmad in a news conference.

The 2020 African women’s cup across the continent has also been cancelled, and the CHAN tournament has been postponed till January 2021. However, the African governing body said that it will launch a Women’s Champions League in 2021.

This came at a time when different tournaments like the UEFA and the 2020 Copa American were also postponed due to COVID-19.

‘’The CAF Executive Committee is satisfied with the Cameroonian authorities for their commitment towards the hosting of the two competitions,” CAF President Ahmad Ahmad said.
