KIU, Main Campus – The School of Law will hold elections for the new president of the KIU Law Society on March 28, 2025, Twahiri Waiswa, the Chairperson of the KIU Law Society Electoral Commission, confirmed on Monday.
According to the election timeline released by Waiswa, candidates will begin collecting nominations on Tuesday, March 18, and must submit them by the close of business on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Candidate screening will take place on Monday, March 24, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Following the screening, successful candidates will meet with the Electoral Commission, accompanied by two agents per candidate, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Campaigning will be permitted only after the screening process, with candidates having the opportunity to present their manifestos during an open debate scheduled for Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Candidates will then have a day of rest before voting takes place on Friday, March 28, 2025.
Waiswa assured that the election would be free and fair but urged candidates and voters to meet the necessary requirements.
"We really don't expect any commotion in this process, especially considering that our working standards are clear. With the kind of qualifications required for positions like president, we expect candidates to be individuals with great minds, not hooligans," he said.
"We urge all candidates to come with both their KIU identity card and Law Society membership card, as well as the official KIU Law Society T-shirt," he added.
Waiswa also encouraged law students to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
"Please come out in large numbers and exercise your right. It is your constitutional right to choose your leader. Be sure to bring your identity card on voting day," he advised.
He further confirmed that the KIU Law Society is collaborating with all relevant stakeholders, including the university administration, to ensure the success of the elections.
The winner of the March 28th election will replace Pius Kiyemba, who has served as president since April 2024.
