KIU, Main Campus - Students from the School of Law were provided with insights into the essential skills required to excel in the legal profession. This guidance was shared during a mentorship workshop held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the 5th floor of the Iddi Basajjabalaba Memorial Library.
The event, organized by the KIU Law Society, featured Arinaitwe Patterson, a renowned lawyer from Signum Advocates, as the workshop facilitator. During his presentation, Arinaitwe encouraged students to master these seven crucial skills during their time in school, emphasizing that time for learning in the field is limited.
These skills encompass communication, information analysis, attention to detail, commercial awareness, teamwork, organization, and creative problem-solving.
Arinaitwe advised, "It's imperative to hone these skills while on campus. Consider getting involved in leadership roles within associations like the Law Society or even the Guild Union."
He further stressed the importance of developing social skills as a law student to effectively collaborate with individuals of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Patterson suggested joining a team, whether it be a club, choir, or any group that promotes teamwork.
Counsel Arinaitwe also underscored the significance of lawyers comprehending their professional code of ethics and enhancing their capacity through effective communication.
Nazil Mugumya, the Speaker of the KIU Law Society, expressed gratitude to Counsel Arinaitwe for inspiring aspiring lawyers and thanked the students for their enthusiastic participation.
"I extend my gratitude to everyone who attended today's mentorship session with Counsel Arinaitwe Patterson of Signum Advocates. I hope we gained valuable insights for our careers and life beyond law school," he stated following the workshop.
Mugumya also announced upcoming mentorship series and activities, such as a car wash event scheduled for the 28th to the 30th of this month and the forthcoming Law Week next month. He encouraged everyone to actively engage in these opportunities due to the benefits they offer.
"In anticipation of Law Week next month, I urge all of you to participate in these activities as they hold numerous advantages," he concluded.
